Fabrics for Menswear Specialists and Tailors

For classic menswear, worsted wool, fresco, and flannel are especially suitable for suits, tweed and hopsack for jackets, poplin and oxford for shirts, as well as coat wool and loden for outerwear. At Stoffgroßhandel Armbrüster you’ll find these qualities as Italian designer fabrics by the meter.

In men’s tailoring, material decides almost everything: how a jacket sits at the shoulder, how trousers fall, how long a suit keeps its shape. Customers often notice the difference not by the cut, but by the feel of the fabric. That’s exactly why it’s worth making a selection that goes beyond standard goods.

Worsted or Woolen: The Most Important Difference

Worsted is made from long, parallel-combed fibers. The result is smooth, fine, and stable in shape, ideal for suits that should fit cleanly. Woolen uses shorter, uncombed fibers and thus appears bulkier, rougher, and warmer, typical for tweed and flannel. Knowing what type of yarn is in a fabric allows you to judge the drape of a style even before cutting.

Fabric weight and judging the season correctly

Fabric weight helps determine which season a style is suitable for. Lightweight summer qualities like fresco or linen blends are usually around 200 to 260 grams per square meter and remain airy. Year-round fabrics often fall between 260 and 300 grams. Heavier winter qualities such as flannel or coat wool are above that and give more structure. The exact values differ by quality, so it’s worth checking each fabric individually.

Why our fabrics are special for menswear specialists

Our menswear qualities are designer deadstock from limited Italian stocks, originally made for high-end collections. For you, that means: fabrics with material depth that you can see in the display and on the customer, and patterns that don’t hang in every second shop. Since you can’t judge feel and drape on a screen, our sales representative will come to you with the fabrics so you can compare at your leisure.
